per·sis·tence // (pr-sstns, -zs-)

n.

1. The act of persisting.
2. The state or quality of being persistent; persistency.
3. Continuance of an effect after the cause is removed.

A couple of weeks ago, in one of those rare occasions that I had free time to spare, I had an enjoyable discussion with a very good friend of mine about what makes an idea, an initiative fail. Is it because we are not talented enough? Is it that we are not smart enough? Not working hard enough? Is our idea for the next Tweeter not good enough? I concluded that the main cause of failure is the lack of persistence. We don’t persist hard enough to fulfill our dreams. We have a tendency to give up easily. We learnt to jump from one idea to another just like we surf on the internet from website to website. Maybe persistence is the answer…

“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

Calvin Coolidge
